ABOUT FELTED AND FLEECED
I am located in Nova Scotia, Canada, where we have lots of winter weather and a need for warm fingers for making snowmen when we have given up snowing endless amounts of snow. It made sense to start making and selling them as I live in a province where cold and snow lasts almost five months. We average nearly 250cm in the province.
My obsession with making mittens started after my best friend gave me a pair of sweater mittens that he purchased in Mongolia. I was fascinated by them and went on a search on how to make them. I found some instruction websites but in the end designed my own patterns and made them my own. At the end of 2014, I had made so many mittens, I decided to sell them. They sold out within weeks. It is all history from there!
My mitten making begins by finding wool wherever I can. That is half the fun! The material is at least 70% wool (or otherwise indicated) and felted in very hot water and put in a hot dryer. The felting process shrinks and tightens the material to make it denser and warmer. I then cut out my patterns, assemble, sew and decorate. Some are decorated with buttons, appliqué or left plain and in the end each one is unique and original.
I hope you enjoy the mittens as much as I like making them. Each one is made with love and happiness!
Because my mittens have been so popular, they deserve their own website:
